WARNING POLITICAL POST
My apologies. I don't do this much, if at all but I am frustrated, and disappointed in our National leaders after the last couple weeks that featured the 1st government shutdown in 17 years.
As most of you who are reading this know, I am a proud Republican. I am proud because I believe in my heart that conservative ideas are the ones that have made this country great and can provide us with a way out of our current problems. Having said that I don't believe that my friends (and more - Susann is a very proud Democrat) across the isle are evil or have ill intent. Unfortunately, for whatever reason - 24 for hour news cycle, gerrymandered districts - it has become a us vs. them discussion and it is becoming frightening.
The best statement I ever heard about the political parties is this: Republicans see the world as it is and Democrats see the world as they want it to be. I truly believe there is immense value in both of these perspectives and it disappoints me to no end when either end of the political spectrum degrades the other sides point of view. To summarize I know Republicans don't want to kill Grandma and I don't believe for a second that the Democrats are out to turn American into a Socialists state.
Great Shawn, your and even handed guy, why are you on the soapbox tonight? It is my firm belief that one of the unique strengths of America is that, almost alone among nations, we have been able to hand a better nation from one generation to the next. This did not happen by chance - stunning amounts hard work coupled with clear and fair (reasonably) political leadership and the blessing of this continent with almost unimaginable natural resources have, time and again, shown that America is uniquely blessed among nations. Susann and I have been blessed with two amazing children of our own and we are prepared to make, as our parents made for us, significant sacrifices to ensure that they are given every opportunity to succeed. But I fear that the opportunities that I have been given so far in my life may not be there for the next generation if we don't wake up as a nation.
Having said all of that I know in my heart that this Nation has been uniquely blessed and that every time we have to have leadership, someone step forward.
I close with this - One of my heroes from history is Winston Churchill. He is probably, other than Christ, one of the most quoted men in history. My favorite quote- while he was exhorting the United Kingdom to victory over a truly evil enemy - is this "Deserve Victory!" That is what I want for myself and those who I love and that is what I plan to do everything in my power to accomplish. I just pray that our political leadership has a similar belief, not for themselves or their party, but for the nation.
